Axes

DID YOU KNOW?

The stone-age axe was used from 1.5 million years ago and is one of the oldest tools in human history. [1]

KNOW THE RISK

  • An axe is a powerful tool for chopping wood, clearing brush, or splitting logs — but its strength makes it dangerous when misused. [1]
  • Axes can cause severe injuries including deep cuts, severed tendons, broken bones, and in extreme cases, fatal wounds.
  • Common risks include muscle strains, lacerations, eye injuries, or hitting nearby objects or people due to poor control or poor footing.

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Wear Protective Gear

  • Use safety glasses, work gloves, and steel-toed boots to protect against chips, debris, and dropped tools. [2]

2. Clear Your Surroundings

  • Ensure there are no obstructions or bystanders within your swing radius. Keep pets and children far away. [2]

3. Use a Chopping Block

  • A chopping block raises the work to a safer height, prevents the axe from hitting the ground, and reduces the chance of deflection.

4. Carry the Axe Safely

  • When walking, hold the axe at your side with the blade facing down and away from your body. Never carry it over your shoulder. [2]

TOOL SAFETY REMINDER

Axes are among humanity’s oldest and most effective tools — but they demand respect. Work on stable ground, wear PPE, and maintain control with every swing. Safety starts before you strike.
