Back Safety

DID YOU KNOW?

Back injuries are the most common musculoskeletal disorder among U.S. workers, accounting for nearly 20% of all workplace injuries. [1] But most of them are preventable with better posture, lifting techniques, and awareness.

KNOW THE RISK

  • Back strains are one of the most common workplace injuries, affecting people in both labor-intensive and office jobs.
  • It’s estimated that 80% of people will experience back pain during their lifetime — often due to improper lifting or posture.
  • Back injuries can be painful and debilitating, sometimes leading to missed work or long-term disability.
  • Injuries can occur from a single event, but more commonly develop from poor habits over time.

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Hinge at Your Hips and Bend Your Knees When Lifting

  • Never bend at the waist to pick up objects. Keep your back straight, engage your core, and lift with your legs.

2. Assess the Load Before Lifting

  • Make sure the object is manageable. If it’s too heavy or awkward, use a dolly, get help, or break it into smaller loads.

3. Sit With Support

  • When sitting, place your feet flat on the floor and sit back against the chair. Adjust monitor height and keyboard position to reduce slouching.

4. Sleep Smart

  • Use a firm mattress and place a pillow under your knees (if you sleep on your back) or between your knees (if you sleep on your side) to maintain natural spine alignment.

BACK SAFETY REMINDER

Your back is involved in almost every movement you make — and once injured, recovery can be slow. Use proper body mechanics, maintain good posture, and don’t take shortcuts when lifting or sitting. A little prevention today can spare a lot of pain tomorrow.
