Back-to-School Safety

DID YOU KNOW?

School bus-related crashes kill about 100 people annually in the U.S. — and most of the victims are pedestrians, not passengers. [2] As summer winds down, it’s time for everyone to sharpen their focus on back-to-school safety.

STAY INFORMED

  • Children are at higher risk of injury during school commutes, especially in the first few weeks of the academic year. Drivers may be out of practice, and kids are often distracted or adjusting to new routines. [1]
  • Parents, students, and drivers all play a role in ensuring safe travel to and from school.

HELPFUL TIPS

1. For Pedestrians

  • Stay on sidewalks and always use crosswalks. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing — don’t assume you’re seen. [1]

2. For Bus Riders

  • Stand at least 6 feet from the curb while waiting. Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the driver signals before boarding or crossing. [1]

3. For Drivers

  • Never pass a bus that is loading or unloading children. Stop when red lights are flashing, even if you’re on the opposite side of the road (unless a median separates traffic). [1]

4. For Backpack Safety

  • Help kids avoid back strain by evenly distributing weight. A child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10–15% of their body weight. [1]

BACK-TO-SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER

Back-to-school season brings increased foot traffic, bike riders, and school buses. Whether you’re behind the wheel or walking your child to class, take extra time and caution. A moment of patience can prevent a lifetime of regret.
