MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Consider an Artificial Tree
- Artificial trees are flame-resistant and safer for homes with children or pets — especially when UL-certified and properly stored. [2]
2. Cut the Trunk Before Placing a Real Tree
- Before placing a real tree in its stand, cut 2 inches from the base to allow better water absorption. Refill the water daily. [2]
3. Place Trees Away from Heat Sources
- Keep trees at least 3 feet away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, and heat vents. Avoid placing near high-traffic doorways. [2]
4. Dispose of Dry Trees Promptly
- Remove and recycle real trees when they become dry — even if the season isn’t over. A dry tree can go up in flames in seconds. [2]
