DID YOU KNOW?
Electrical fires in the U.S. result in $1.4 billion in property damage each year. [1] One of the most common causes? Overloaded circuits.
KNOW THE RISK
- Overloaded electrical circuits are a major cause of residential fires. Plugging in too many devices or using the wrong equipment can push wiring beyond safe limits. [1]
- Over 47,000 home fires in the U.S. are caused by electrical failure or malfunction each year. Many are preventable. [1]
- Warning signs of an overloaded circuit include flickering lights, buzzing outlets, warm wall plates, or frequently tripped breakers. [1]
MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Don’t Overuse Extension Cords
- Never plug multiple appliances into a single outlet using extension cords or multi-outlet converters. These are temporary solutions — not permanent wiring. [1]
2. Use Proper Wattage
- Only use bulbs and devices with the recommended wattage for your fixtures and outlets. Exceeding limits increases the risk of overheating. [1]
3. Be Cautious with Power Strips
- Power strips don’t increase circuit capacity — they only provide more access points. Use with care and never "daisy-chain" multiple strips. [1]
CIRCUIT SAFETY REMINDER
More plugs doesn’t mean more power. Every circuit has a safe load limit, and exceeding it can lead to fire, equipment damage, or serious injury. Stay within rated capacities and have a qualified electrician assess your needs if you’re unsure.
