Contact Lenses

DID YOU KNOW?

Leonardo da Vinci is credited with introducing the concept of contact lenses in the early 1500s, more than 400 years before they became a reality. [2]

KNOW THE RISK

  • Contact lenses offer convenience and vision correction, but they also present risks like eye infections, corneal damage, or vision loss when used improperly. [1]
  • Wearing lenses too long or failing to follow hygiene practices increases the risk of serious complications. Even sleeping or swimming with lenses in can cause permanent damage. [1]

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Replace Your Lens Case Regularly

  • Switch your contact lens storage case every 3 months to prevent bacterial buildup that can lead to eye infections. [1]

2. Never Swim or Shower With Lenses

  • Remove contact lenses before swimming or bathing — water can carry bacteria like Acanthamoeba, which can cause painful and blinding infections. [1]

3. Use Sterile Lens Solution Only

  • Clean and store lenses with sterile solution made for contacts. Never use tap water or saliva. [1]

4. Don’t Transfer Solution Between Containers

  • Transferring solution to smaller bottles increases contamination risk. Always use solution directly from the original container. [1]

EYE HEALTH REMINDER

Contact lenses make life clearer — but only when handled properly. Stick to safe hygiene habits, follow your eye care provider’s instructions, and replace supplies on schedule to protect your vision.
