Crowd Safety

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2015, a crowd crush in Saudi Arabia resulted in over 2,000 deaths. [2] And in 2021, 10 people died at the Astroworld Festival due to crowd pressure. [1] Crowd crushes are rare, but when they happen, they escalate fast — and often end in tragedy.

KNOW THE RISK

  • On November 5, 2021, a fatal crowd crush occurred at the Astroworld music festival in Houston, Texas, killing 10 people and injuring hundreds. [1]
  • A crowd crush can occur anytime people gather in large numbers in confined or poorly controlled spaces, such as concerts, sporting events, or festivals. [2]
  • When crowd density exceeds 4–5 people per square meter, it becomes extremely dangerous. Individuals lose control of their movement, and pressure can lead to injury or suffocation. [2]
  • These incidents are more common than many realize, especially in places lacking crowd control, exits, or emergency response plans.

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Be Aware of Density and Movement

  • If you feel pressure or find yourself with fewer than 2 square feet of space, begin moving diagonally to a less dense area. This is a sign the crowd is approaching a dangerous threshold.

2. Avoid Crush Points

  • Stay clear of fixed objects like fences, railings, and walls. These can become deadly pinch points in a crowd surge. [3]

3. Stay Upright and Protect Your Chest

  • Keep your arms in front of your chest, like a boxer, to create space for breathing and to protect vital organs. Don’t bend over to pick up dropped items.

4. If You Fall, Roll on Your Side

  • If you can’t get up, curl into a fetal position on your left side. This protects your heart and lungs while making yourself more compact. [4]

CROWD SAFETY REMINDER

Crowd crushes are fast, silent, and deadly. Learn the warning signs and stay aware in large gatherings. Your safety depends on your ability to act before things spiral out of control.
