DID YOU KNOW?
Pedestrian deaths have increased 59% since 2009. [2] While driving distractions get the spotlight, distracted walking is a growing hazard — especially with phone use on the rise.
KNOW THE RISK
- Walking while distracted can be just as dangerous as distracted driving. Trips, falls, and collisions with vehicles are all common outcomes.
- Since 2009, pedestrian fatalities have trended upward every year, even as vehicle safety improves. [2]
- Cell phones are the number one cause of distracted walking incidents. Looking down, texting, or scrolling while walking increases your risk of tripping, missing curbs, or stepping into traffic.
MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Don’t Text and Walk
- Keep your head up and your phone away while walking. Stop in a safe place if you need to send a message or check directions.
2. Skip the Headphones
- Walking with earbuds or headphones can dull your awareness of nearby vehicles, bicycles, or hazards. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
3. Watch Where You’re Going
- Stay off your screen and keep an eye out for uneven pavement, curbs, and signage. You can’t react to what you can’t see.
4. Cross Streets Safely
- Use crosswalks and always look both ways before crossing. Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road.
DISTRACTED WALKING SAFETY REMINDER
It only takes a second of distraction to cause a serious injury. Stay aware, stay off your phone, and walk with purpose. Being present on the move could save your life — or someone else’s.
