DID YOU KNOW?
Moonquakes are real — they happen less frequently than earthquakes but can last up to 10 minutes. [3] Back here on Earth, quakes strike suddenly and without warning, making preparation essential for survival.
STAY INFORMED
- Earthquakes can happen anywhere, and they often strike with little or no warning. [1]
- Globally, earthquakes have caused over 750,000 deaths in the last century. Densely populated areas and poorly reinforced buildings are most at risk. [2]
- Falling objects, collapsing structures, and fires from broken gas lines are leading causes of injury and death during quakes. [1]
HELPFUL TIPS
1. Prepare in Advance
- Create a family emergency plan, identify safe spots in each room, and keep an earthquake kit on hand. Include water, food, flashlights, and first-aid supplies. [1]
2. During a Quake: Drop, Cover, and Hold On
- Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck under a sturdy object, and hold on until shaking stops. Avoid doorways — they offer little protection. [1]
3. If Inside, Stay Inside
- Do not run outside during shaking. Falling debris is a major hazard. Stay where you are until it’s safe to move. [1]
4. If in a Vehicle, Pull Over Safely
- Stop in a clear location away from bridges, overpasses, power lines, and trees. Stay in the car until the shaking ends. [1]
EARTHQUAKE SAFETY REMINDER
Earthquakes are unpredictable — but your response doesn’t have to be. Prepare now so you can react instinctively and calmly when the ground starts shaking. Practice makes protection possible.
