Esophagus Cancer

DID YOU KNOW?

Over 70% of esophageal cancer cases occur in men, and the disease is often not caught until it has advanced. [3]

KNOW THE RISK

  • The esophagus is the hollow, muscular tube that carries food and liquid from the throat to the stomach.
  • Esophageal cancer occurs when malignant cells form in the tissue lining the esophagus. It can be aggressive and is often detected late. [2]
  • Although relatively rare compared to other cancers, esophageal cancer has a high death rate due to late-stage diagnoses. [3]
  • In the U.S., there are roughly 20,000 new cases and more than 16,000 deaths each year, highlighting the importance of prevention and early detection.

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Avoid Tobacco and Heavy Alcohol Use

  • Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are the top risk factors for esophageal cancer. Avoiding both can significantly lower your risk. [3]

2. Manage Acid Reflux

  • Chronic reflux can lead to Barrett’s esophagus — a condition that increases cancer risk. Speak with your doctor if you have frequent heartburn. [2]

3. Be Aware of HPV Risks

  • Some strains of human papilloma virus (HPV) are linked to esophageal cancer. Practicing safe behaviors and considering vaccination may reduce risk.

HEALTH REMINDER

Esophageal cancer is rare but deadly when not caught early. Know the symptoms — such as difficulty swallowing, weight loss, or chest pain — and talk to your doctor if anything feels off. Prevention starts with awareness and healthy choices.
