KNOW THE RISK
- When lifting a vehicle with a floor jack, it's important to understand that the jack is only designed to lift — not support. [1]
- Working under a vehicle supported only by a jack is extremely dangerous. A sudden shift, leak, or jack failure can lead to crushing injuries or fatalities. [1]

MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Always Use Floor Jacks and Jack Stands on Level Ground
- Never use jacks on sloped or uneven surfaces. Park on a flat, solid surface like a concrete garage floor to prevent rolling or tipping. [1]
2. Use Jack Stands — Always
- Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack. Lower the vehicle onto properly rated jack stands before getting underneath. [1]
3. Shake Test Before Working
- Once the car is resting on jack stands, give the vehicle a gentle push to confirm it's stable and secure. If it moves or shifts, reset and reposition. [1]
4. Match Load Ratings
- Jack stands must be rated to handle the weight of the vehicle you're lifting. Don’t mix and match stands of different capacities. [1]
