DID YOU KNOW?
Formaldehyde is produced in small amounts by most living organisms — even humans. [1] But when it builds up in indoor environments, it can cause serious health problems.
KNOW THE RISK
- Formaldehyde is a flammable chemical used in building materials and household products, including insulation, glues, and some cleaning agents. [1]
- It’s especially common in manufactured wood, permanent press fabrics, and particle board furniture. [1]
- Exposure above 0.1 ppm (parts per million) can cause burning eyes, nose, throat irritation, coughing, and nausea. [1]
- Long-term exposure has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, including nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia. [1]
MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Choose Low-Emission Products
- Before purchasing pressed wood or particle board products, check that they are labeled as low-emitting or formaldehyde-free. [1]
2. Improve Ventilation
- Reduce formaldehyde levels in your home or workplace by increasing airflow and using exhaust fans in areas where chemical-containing products are used. [1]
3. Opt for Exterior-Grade Materials
- When possible, use exterior-grade pressed wood, which emits significantly less formaldehyde than standard grades. [1]
CHEMICAL SAFETY REMINDER
You can’t see formaldehyde, but it’s everywhere — in furniture, flooring, and fabrics. Take steps to limit exposure, ventilate properly, and choose safer products for a healthier environment at home and work.
