DID YOU KNOW?
Formaldehyde is produced in small amounts by most living organisms — including humans. [1] While naturally occurring, high levels of exposure from manufactured products can pose serious health risks.
KNOW THE RISK
- Formaldehyde is a flammable chemical used in building materials, household products, and industrial settings. [1]
- It’s found in pressed wood products, adhesives, permanent-press fabrics, insulation, and some disinfectants. [1]
- Exposure above 0.1 parts per million (ppm) can cause burning eyes, nose irritation, coughing, and nausea. [1]
- Long-term exposure may increase the risk of certain cancers, including leukemia and nasopharyngeal cancer. [1]
MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Choose Low-Formaldehyde Products
- Before purchasing pressed-wood or particle board furniture, look for products labeled as low-emitting or formaldehyde-free. [1]
2. Increase Ventilation
- Ensure adequate airflow when introducing new materials into your home or workspace, especially with items that have adhesives or coatings. [1]
3. Use Exterior-Grade Materials When Possible
- “Exterior-grade” pressed wood typically emits less formaldehyde due to different adhesives. Consider these for interior projects. [1]
FORMALDEHYDE SAFETY REMINDER
Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s safe. Reducing your exposure to formaldehyde in your home and workplace can protect your eyes, lungs, and long-term health. Be aware of what’s in your surroundings — and make informed choices when purchasing materials.
