DID YOU KNOW?
Research shows that HIV may have jumped from chimpanzees to humans as early as the late 1800s. [1]
KNOW THE RISK
- HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) attacks the immune system and weakens the body’s ability to fight infection and disease. [1]
- There is currently no cure, but HIV can be effectively treated and managed with antiretroviral therapy (ART). [1]
MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Never Share Needles and Wear Condoms Correctly
- Use only sterile needles and always practice safe sex to prevent transmission through blood or bodily fluids. [2]
2. Avoid Contact With Blood or Body Fluids
- Wear appropriate PPE when providing first aid or cleaning up biohazards. Treat all blood as potentially infectious. [2]
3. Consider PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)
- PrEP is a daily medication for people at higher risk of HIV exposure. It lowers the chance of infection by more than 90% when taken consistently. [2]
HEALTH SAFETY REMINDER
HIV is a manageable condition — but prevention is still the best protection. Practice safe behaviors, get tested regularly, and talk to your healthcare provider about risk-reduction options like PrEP.
