- Walk through each major step of the job and identify what could cause an injury, equipment damage, or release of energy
- Look beyond routing hazards to consider nearby operations, changing conditions, store energy, line-of-fire exposure, and other unique conditions
- Identify mitigating controls such as PPE, procedures, permits, barriers, isolation methos, and other safeguards
- Stop and reassess when conditions, scope, equipment, or personnel change
