DID YOU KNOW?
More than 150 workplace deaths from ladders occur in the U.S. every year, making them one of the top causes of fatal falls in construction. [2]
KNOW THE RISK
- Falls are the leading cause of death in the construction industry, and ladders are involved in nearly one-third of those incidents. [1]
- Ladder-related injuries are also common in households, maintenance jobs, and warehouse environments. Many of these incidents are preventable with proper setup and use. [1]
MITIGATE THE RISK
1. Choose the Right Ladder Height
- Ensure the ladder is tall enough to reach your task without standing on the top rung. Overreaching causes instability and increases fall risk. [1]
2. Set Up on Level Ground
- Make sure the ladder base is secured and on a flat, stable surface. Use ladder levelers if needed. [1]
3. Be Aware of Doorways and Foot Traffic
- Do not use ladders near doorways without blocking access. Accidental contact can knock the ladder off balance. [1]
4. Maintain Three Points of Contact
- Always keep two hands and one foot — or two feet and one hand — on the ladder. Never carry tools while climbing; use a tool belt or hoist. [1]
LADDER SAFETY REMINDER
Ladders seem simple, but they account for far too many workplace injuries and deaths. Follow basic precautions and use ladders with intention and care. Every step counts — especially the wrong one.
