DID YOU KNOW?
Liver cancer rates have more than tripled in the U.S. since 1980. [2] While some risk factors are unavoidable, many cases are linked to preventable causes like chronic hepatitis and alcohol use.
STAY INFORMED
- Liver cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. In the U.S., men are more than twice as likely as women to develop it. [2]
- Symptoms often don’t appear until the disease is advanced. Warning signs include unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, fatigue, and yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). [1]
- Common risk factors include long-term hepatitis B or C infection, cirrhosis, heavy alcohol use, diabetes, obesity, and exposure to aflatoxins (toxins from moldy food). [1]
HELPFUL TIPS
1. Drink Alcohol in Moderation — If at All
- Excessive alcohol use can damage the liver over time, increasing your risk for cirrhosis and liver cancer. Limit intake or avoid alcohol altogether. [1]
2. Maintain a Healthy Weight
- Obesity increases the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer. [1]
3. Get Vaccinated and Screened
- Vaccination for hepatitis B can prevent infection. If you have chronic hepatitis or other risk factors, talk to your doctor about regular liver cancer screening. [1]
4. Protect Against Hepatitis C
- Use caution with tattoos, piercings, and needle sharing. Get tested if you’re at risk — new treatments can cure hepatitis C and reduce liver cancer risk. [1]
LIVER CANCER SAFETY REMINDER
Liver cancer can develop silently, but many of its causes are preventable. Protect your liver by living a healthy lifestyle and staying informed about your risks. Early detection saves lives — talk to your doctor if you’re at risk.
