Ozone Exposure

DID YOU KNOW?

In the 1800s, scientist Christian Schönbein noticed a sharp, chlorine-like smell after lightning strikes. He identified it as ozone — and while it plays a protective role in the upper atmosphere, ground-level ozone is anything but healthy. [3]

KNOW THE RISK

  • Ozone (O3) is a highly reactive gas composed of three oxygen atoms. While beneficial in the stratosphere, it becomes a harmful pollutant when found at ground level. [2]
  • Ground-level ozone is created by chemical reactions between nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — often from vehicle exhaust, power plants, and industrial emissions. [1]
  • Exposure to ozone can cause coughing, throat irritation, chest pain, and breathing difficulty. It may worsen asthma, bronchitis, and other chronic respiratory diseases. [1]
  • Long-term exposure is likely to contribute to lung function decline and increase the risk of premature death from heart or lung disease.

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Track Local Air Quality

  • Use EPA’s AirNow.gov or a weather app to monitor ozone levels in your area. Avoid strenuous outdoor activity when air quality is poor. [1]

2. Limit Outdoor Time on High-Ozone Days

  • Ozone levels are highest in the afternoon and early evening, especially in summer. Plan exercise or work activities for earlier in the day if air quality alerts are issued.

3. Don’t Rely on Houseplants

  • Despite common belief, houseplants are not an effective way to remove ozone from indoor air. Instead, use air filters and limit indoor pollution sources.

OZONE SAFETY REMINDER

Ozone exposure doesn’t leave a visible trace — but its effects on your lungs can be long-lasting. Stay informed about air quality, adjust outdoor activities when needed, and limit your exposure during high ozone days.
