- Respirators are important PPE for protecting against hazards such as dust, fibers, fumes, vapors, oxygen-deficient atmospheres, and toxic contaminants.
- Different hazards require different types of respiratory protection.
- Air-purifying respirators use filters, cartridges, or canisters to remove specific contaminants, while other situations may require supplied-air or self-contained breathing equipment. [1]
HELPFUL TIPS
- Use the correct respirator; protection must be selected for the specific contaminant and exposure
- Tight-fitting respirators must be fit tested before initial use, whenever a different facepiece is used, and at least annually thereafter [2]
- Facial hair, damaged sealing surfaces, or incorrect positioning can prevent a tight-fitting respirator from sealing properly [1]
- Check respirators before use, and replace damaged or expired components as required
- Air-purifying respirators should never be used in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere
