DID YOU KNOW?
Falls are the #1 cause of emergency room visits in the U.S., accounting for over 21% of all ER admissions. [1] While often overlooked, slips, trips, and falls are among the most common — and preventable — accidents in both workplaces and homes.
KNOW THE RISK
- Slips, trips, and falls result in over 8 million emergency room visits each year. These incidents happen suddenly — often when we least expect it. [1]
- Fractures are a common consequence, and while broken bones are serious, head injuries and long-term mobility issues can be even more life-altering.
- Half of all accidental deaths in the home are caused by falls, with stairways, bathrooms, and uneven flooring being the top risk areas. [1]
- Older adults are especially at risk, with falls being the leading cause of injury-related death in people 65 and older.
HELPFUL TIPS
1. Clean Up Spills Quickly and Safely
- Clean up spills immediately, and avoid cleaners that leave behind a slick residue. Use “wet floor” signs until the surface is dry. [2]
2. Mark Wet or Recently Cleaned Areas
- Whether it’s a freshly mopped floor or a rainy entranceway, mark the area clearly with caution signage to alert others. [2]
3. Keep Walkways Clear
- Remove clutter, cords, and loose items from hallways and paths. Tripping over everyday objects is a top cause of preventable injuries.
4. Secure Rugs and Mats
- Make sure rugs are flat and anchored with non-slip backings. Avoid curled edges, especially in high-traffic areas like entryways and kitchens.
FALL PREVENTION REMINDER
Slips and trips may seem minor — until someone gets hurt. Small steps like keeping floors dry, walkways clear, and rugs secure make a big difference. Protect yourself and those around you by staying alert to the most common hazards.
