Train Crossings

TOOLBOX TALK: TRAIN CROSSINGS — STAY ALERT, STAY ALIVE

DID YOU KNOW?

A freight train can take a mile or more to come to a complete stop — even in an emergency. That’s why trains always have the right of way. Every year, preventable collisions at railroad crossings result in hundreds of deaths and injuries across the U.S. [1]

STAY INFORMED

  • Accidents at train crossings happen daily — often due to impatience, distraction, or failure to obey warning signals.
  • In 2021 alone, there were over 1,600 collisions and more than 230 deaths at U.S. railroad crossings. [1]
  • Despite the danger, these accidents are highly preventable with proper awareness and respect for signals.

HELPFUL TIPS

1. Always Expect a Train

  • Trains can travel in either direction at any time. Look both ways and never assume the track is clear. [1]

2. Obey All Signals — No Exceptions

  • Never drive around a lowered gate or try to beat a train. Signals are activated well before a train arrives for a reason. [1]

3. Watch for Multiple Trains

  • After one train passes, don’t rush forward — a second train may be approaching from the opposite direction.

4. If Your Vehicle Stalls on the Tracks

  • Exit immediately and move away from the tracks at a 45-degree angle in the direction of the train. This helps you avoid flying debris in the event of a collision.

TRAIN CROSSING REMINDER

Trains can’t swerve. They can’t stop quickly. And they can’t see you until it’s too late. Whether you're driving or walking, treat every train crossing with caution and respect. Your patience can save lives — including your own.
