Walking on Snow & Ice

DID YOU KNOW?

18% of all work-related injuries are caused by slips, trips, and falls — many on snow and ice. [2]

KNOW THE RISK

  • Snow and ice create slippery and hazardous conditions for pedestrians, especially in parking lots, sidewalks, and building entrances.
  • More than 50% of falls on snow and ice result in injuries that require medical attention. [1]
  • Slips and falls on winter surfaces cause over 1,500 deaths annually and are a leading cause of workers' compensation claims. [1]

MITIGATE THE RISK

1. Wear Proper Footwear

  • Choose shoes or boots with slip-resistant soles, such as rubber or neoprene with deep tread. Avoid smooth leather or plastic soles. [1]

2. Take Short, Shuffling Steps

  • Walk slowly and carefully, using short steps to maintain balance on slick surfaces. Think of it as a "penguin walk." [1]

3. Use Handrails and Keep Eyes on the Path

  • Hold handrails when using stairs and scan the area ahead to avoid icy patches. Don’t rush. [1]

4. Keep Hands Free

  • Avoid putting your hands in your pockets, which affects balance and reaction time if you start to slip. Carry items in a backpack when possible. [1]

WINTER SAFETY REMINDER

Winter walking requires extra caution. Choose the right footwear, stay alert, and move deliberately to avoid injury. A little preparation can keep you upright and injury-free all season long.
